I really like how Apple has taken to the dark side, supporting DRM as seen by their crippling of DTrace and the QuickTime update that disables video editing apps. I guess this gives me more reason to avoid switching to OS X and replacing my aging laptop with a MacBook.
I bought a "refurbished" mini-HD from Geeks.com. I was curious whether by "refurbished" they meant it was factory refurbished, in which case the drive should have been clean, or just "used and returned to us," in which case there were probably a lot of deleted files still on the drive. I decided before trying autopsy/sleuth, I'd try magicrescue. I found about 840MB of data -- mostly mathematical graphs and such and some other files that support my theory that the previous owner was quite the nerd.
I started working on easy-to-follow, baby-step approach tutorials on how to use encryption on Windows. My motivation is to teach my wife how to install and use GnuPG and eventually OTR and TrueCrypt. So far, I've completed the GnuPG How-To. Hopefully someone else is able to find it useful.
People think I'm paranoid because I refuse to store passwords in Firefox. Then vulnerabilities come along that make me smirk.
I've been using DokuWiki for a little while and really like it. I had the idea of trying to convert my Drupal site, which is mainly used as a blog, to running on DokuWiki. It was a fun experiment, but led me to believe that there was no seamless way to perform such a conversion without far more effort than could be justified.
After doing some research online and conducting some benchmarks using ab, I decided to make the switch from Apache 2.2 to Lighttpd.
In June 2005, I wrote the Gaim random away plugin to set random away messages with quotes from bash.org. I didn't think anyone used it and I stopped developing it. Apparently, it still has users today despite two years of non-development.
Despite it's claims/illusions of increased security, Windows Vista still sucks. At least it sucks in a horrific way that's funny to watch. Maybe Vista will encourage more people to upgrade to Mac OS X and/or Linux.
