The package with Hardy for the nvidia drivers doesn't actually work. I really wanted graphics acceleration so I decided to download the Nvidia drivers from their site.
I don't know why the Ubuntu people didn't think of this.
Getting video conferencing to work between Linux and Windows is not nearly as easy as I had assumed it would be. Apparently Skype and Yahoo both provide Linux binaries, but neither support webcams in their Linux versions. I've heard that Ekiga can be made to work with Windows Messenger or Microsoft NetMeeting, but haven't had much success with that yet. *sigh*
I've spent the past week evaluating Linux distributions for AMD64 (x86-64) and trying Gentoo 2006.1, Fedora Core 6 and Ubuntu/Xubuntu 6.10 Edgy.
I used DM-Crypt/LUKS with Fedora Core 6 to quell my paranoia regarding a physical compromise of my notebook. I set up swap and partition encryption, especially for sensitive areas such as /home and /var.
I bought myself a refurbished 60GB black iPod video (5th gen.) for $229 (plus tax) at the Apple store. I decided to buy one for my wife for her upcoming birthday; unfortunately, it appears that they're all sold out now.
Apparently, to get VMware Workstation 5.5 working on Fedora Core 6 with SELinux enabled, I need to allow executable stacks. Hopefully, there's a workaround that doesn't require breaking SELinux policy.
I didn't expect it to take so long, but it took me about 2.5 hours to resize my ext3 partition.
